Levucell – Probiotic with Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 (CNC)
Levucell is a registered probiotic in the European Union, containing the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077, approved for use in dairy cows, sheep, and horses. This probiotic prevents ruminal acidosis and significantly enhances growth, milk, and meat production in both dairy and beef livestock. It also helps reduce the negative effects of stressors such as heat and calving, while maintaining peak milk yields.
Yeast-based probiotics differ in strain number, effective dosage, and composition. Through extensive research, Lallemand selected this specific strain based on desirable characteristics that optimize rumen function, and released it under the Levucell brand.
Key Benefits of Levucell:
- Improves rumen activity
- Stabilizes rumen pH
- Enhances fiber digestion
Levucell is manufactured in two forms—one suitable for pelleted feeds and another for mash rations—to support optimal rumen performance. Among all yeast strains studied, this one has shown the strongest effect in stimulating fibrolytic bacteria such as Fibrobacter succinogenes and anti-acidosis bacteria like Megasphaera elsdenii, a lactic acid–utilizing species.

Mode of Action
- Rumen Development Rumen colonization by microorganisms follows a specific and orderly progression, reflecting rapid and healthy maturation. Levucell accelerates this process by consuming oxygen in the rumen, which promotes faster colonization by anaerobic microflora and speeds up rumen development—especially in calves.
2. Rumen pH Stabilization Levucell SC competes with lactic acid–producing bacteria such as Streptococcus bovis for simple sugars in the rumen, thereby limiting their growth and lactic acid accumulation. It also stimulates the growth and metabolism of lactic acid–utilizing bacteria like Megasphaera elsdenii and Selenomonas ruminantium, helping reduce lactic acid levels and promoting pH stability.
